Soundproof Flooring

Soundproof flooring is flooring that either features an attached acoustic underlay or pairs well with an acoustic underlay. You can add soundproofing elements to almost any type of floor, but flexible floors constructed with layers, such as vinyl, hybrid, and engineered timber, are the best suited to soundproofing. FAQs

General

Many of the soundproof flooring options we offer at Online Flooring Store do not require special installation. Instead, you are often able to install these vinyl, hybrid, and engineered timber floors as you would any other floor. Click-and-lock technology is popular in these modern flooring brands.

If your flooring comes with an underlay, there might be an extra element to the installation. However, some flooring underlays are attached to the plank and installed with the rest. If the underlay is not attached, the rule is that the underlay is glued down if the flooring product is also glued down. Loose lay flooring typically pairs well with a loose lay underlayment.

Some styles and brands of flooring are designed to reduce noise naturally. You do not necessarily need to add underlay to make them more soundproof unless you are required to or desire a quieter environment. For example, some apartments and townhouses have regulations regarding acoustic underlay to reduce noise spreading into other units.

Many of the vinyl, hybrid and engineered timber products featured on this page are manufactured to high standards for acoustics. Those brands that do not come with an underlay attached will require an underlay to be fully soundproof.

If you are not interested in installing an underlay or already have an existing flooring system, you can use carpets to reduce noise. Adding smaller carpets to rooms will help limit noise in busy spaces and add to the overall aesthetic. Carpets can also make it possible to avoid adding an underlay to an already quiet flooring.

Soundproofing can guarantee noise reduction to a certain extent. Check your flooring or underlay before buying or installing to ensure you are getting the best possible noise reduction. Consider whether you will be blocking both airborne noise and noises from impacts. Many flooring products will indicate the results of acoustic tests. Look for flooring and underlay that have been tested within the last 5 years at an independent laboratory.

Soundproof floors are not necessarily more expensive than other floors. Depending on the level of noise reduction, you might end up paying more per square foot. There are reasonable options, such as flooring planks that come with an attached underlay. Installing an acoustic underlay with any floor can raise the cost. Make sure to compare the different between underlays before selecting anything.

Installation & Maintenance

Many of the soundproof flooring options we offer at Online Flooring Store do not require special installation.

If you are installing an underlay for flooring that is naturally suited to be soundproofed, like hybrid, engineered timber, or vinyl, then the installation is usually not difficult. The underlayment is installed on the subfloor before the flooring in a quick, easy process. However, if you choose to soundproof hardwood flooring, you might need to install a more complicated underlayment to ensure proper noise reduction.

We do not provide any soundproof flooring installation services at Online Flooring Store. Many of our flooring products are easy to install on your own. You can access our helpful installation guides at https://www.onlineflooringstore.com.au/category/installation-guides/. Or we can connect you with a certified professional layer almost anywhere in Australia. There are over 220 expert layers across Australia who can help you out.

Most soundproof floors are easy to maintain. The most popular way to soundproof flooring is to add an underlay with acoustic properties. Adding an underlay of any type to most flooring styles will increase the durability of your flooring. Underlays make it easier for floors to maintain their structural integrity; the same idea goes for soundproof floors. If you keep your floors clean and limit damage, you can expect the soundproof qualities to last as long as the rest of the flooring.
