FAQ

General

A floating floor is a type of flooring installation method where the individual floorboards or tiles are not secured to the subfloor. Instead, they are laid over a thin underlayment or foam padding, allowing them to "float" above the subfloor.

The benefits of a floating floor include:

  1. Ease of Installation: Floating floors are easy to install and can be placed over existing floors, saving time and labor costs. They can generally be laid down fast and don't require adhesive material or nails, making them a popular choice for DIY installations
  2. Cost-Effectiveness: They are typically less expensive and easier to install than comparable glue-down or nail-down floors, making them a budget-friendly option
  3. Versatility in Design: Floating floors offer flexibility in design, as they are available in a wide variety of styles and colors, allowing homeowners to choose the option that best suits their preferences. At Online Flooring Store, we have Australia's biggest range, with lots of styles to choose from.
  4. Comfort: Walking on floating floors may feel more comfortable due to the air cushion between the floating floor and the substrate, providing some flexibility and making it easier on the knees and back
  5. Removal and Reuse: Floating floors can be easily unlocked and relocated, making them convenient for reuse or reinstallation in a different location, which is practical for DIYers

Installation & Maintenance

A floating floor is installed using the following general steps:

  1. Prepare the Subfloor: Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level.
  2. Lay the Underlayment: Install a foam underlayment to provide cushioning and sound-dampening.
  3. Trim Door Casings: Trim the bottom of door casings to allow the flooring to fit underneath.
  4. Begin Installation: Start laying the floor from the left side of the room, working towards the right. The planks or tiles should fit together with a tongue and groove mechanism or an interlocking system.
  5. Leave Expansion Gaps: Leave a small gap around the perimeter of the room to allow for expansion.
  6. Complete the Installation: Continue laying the floor, ensuring the planks are securely locked together.

The cost of a floating floor compared to a traditional floor installation is often lower, and the installation process is typically easier. Floating floors are generally less expensive and easier to install than traditional flooring that requires nail- or glue-in. They can be placed over existing floors, saving time and labor costs, making them a popular choice for budget-friendly and time-saving projects.

To lay under a floating floor, you typically use an underlayment. The underlayment serves several purposes, including providing cushioning, sound-dampening, and a moisture barrier. Here are the general steps to lay under a floating floorboard:

  1. Prepare the Subfloor: Ensure the subfloor is clean, level, and free of debris.
  2. Lay the Underlayment: 1) Roll out the foam underlayment in a single layer across the floor and size the underlayment and cut it to fit the room, then tack it into the subfloor and seal the seams together

The underlayment helps create a more comfortable and quiet floor, while also providing a moisture barrier and smoothing out any minor subfloor imperfections. It's an essential component of the floating floor installation process.
